Sermons and Almanacs
Canvas panel of the Ten Commandments which was on a wall in the basement of the building. The wall was due to be demolished so the panel was removed, restored, mounted and framed and hung in a circulation space within the SCVO offices.
A collection of printed sermons, almanacs and other papers was donated to the Trust in March 2009. Since then some others have been loaned to the Trust for scanning. These can be viewed by clicking on the links below. The pdf files are searchable, so you can use 'Find' to look for words or phrases of interest. Note, however, that some capitals in the alamanacs are in black letter (Gothic) script, so, for instance, search for 'entecost' rather than 'Pentecost'.
While in no way complete, the collection does show the Catholic Apostolic view of such fundamental theological issues as the Trinity and the Incarnation (1941 Nov/Dec), the particular liturgical relevance of altar furnishings (1959 518), the Church's post-Darwinian interpretation of evolution (1940 Sept) and creation (1961 532), and women (1974 Nov). The sermon on the Parable of the Ten Virgins (1933 22), though delivered at the church in Dundee, is of significance to the church in Edinburgh as this is the parable illustrated in the chancel aisles.
The decline in the number of active clergy can be seen in the increasing dependence on other churches and on reprinting sermons, homilies and ministries from earlier years; where an item is a reprint, it is given with the date of its first issue. The last item issued by the sole remaining pastor of the Church in Edinburgh, John D Stewart, is the Pastoral Letter for Christmas 1957; he died ten days after celebrating Easter in 1958. The note issued to former members of the congregation following the closure of the church (Other Papers, 1958 Note) shows how the issue of the need for confirmation within the Scottish Episcopal Church was tackled. The Church in Glasgow survived longer than the Church in Edinburgh; presumably the note about the cessation of meetings (Other Papers, 1964 Note) was issued in Glasgow, as the church there closed around that time. The final almanac in this collection is for 1969; the Catholic Apostolic Church ceased to celebrate the Eucharist in 1971 with the death of the last priest, Dr Davson of Paddington, London. However, some congregations, especially in Germany, continue to meet for non-Eucharistic worship, as does the Paddington church. Elsewhere, small groups meet to offer prayer and the Litany.
